Sports patronage, a less common practice than sponsorship, involves a company providing financial or material support to a club, federation, or athlete without expecting direct visibility or a contractual agreement in return. The line between sponsorship and sports patronage can sometimes seem blurred. Unlike sponsorship, sports patronage focuses less on visibility and more on building an image and potentially mobilizing employees internally. It can also be part of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) approach or stem from the altruism or passion of a manager. It can sometimes be combined with sponsorship, as in the case of a sponsor of an ocean-going racing sailboat who uses their partnership to offer members of an association the opportunity to participate in a sailing excursion.
