The International Agreement for the Protection of Geographical Indications and their Registration Worldwide, adopted on October 31, 1958, revised in Stockholm on July 14, 1967, and amended on September 28, 1979, establishes an essential legal framework. Its first article sets out a specific structure whereby the signatory countries form a special union within the Union for the Protection of Industrial Property. These countries undertake to guarantee the protection of geographical indications of products from other members of the union, provided that these indications are recognized and protected in their country of origin and are registered with the International Bureau of Intellectual Property, designated in the Convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization.
