The Single International Procedure, in effect since January 14, 2010, allows inventors to file for patent protection in several signatory countries, including France, through an international patent application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). This process can be carried out in one of the seven official languages of WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization): English, Chinese, French, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. It involves drafting an international search report followed by a written opinion, also known as a patentability opinion. An international patent application can be filed through the national patent office of the inventor’s country or directly with WIPO. The PCT was originally signed by 18 states on June 19, 1970 in Washington and entered into force on June 21, 1978. For more information, you can visit the WIPO website at www.ompi.org.
