Aggression manifests as a physical or verbal attack directed at another person with the aim of causing harm, both physical and psychological. Sometimes referred to as “hostile aggression,” this form of aggression is characterized by harmful intent. According to Sigmund Freud, aggressive behavior is associated with the death instinct and originates in a tendency toward self-destruction. Instrumental aggression, on the other hand, differs from hostile aggression in that the aggressive act aims to obtain something, such as material resources or social standing. Furthermore, some psychology specialists distinguish defensive aggression, which occurs in reaction to aggressive behavior from another person.
