When an online advertisement for brand A appears on the website of a competitor brand B, it’s known as “parasitic advertising.” Advertising agencies are generally very careful to avoid this type of situation, which can be detrimental to advertisers who want to promote their brand without being associated with their competitors. However, despite precautions, this phenomenon can sometimes occur, especially when advertisers don’t pay enough attention to the websites where their ads are displayed. Originally, this term referred to a software program developed by Gator Software, designed to enable these ad insertions. Today, although widely used, it remains a subject of concern for online marketing professionals.
