The Best Before End (BBE) date applies to non-perishable food products whose taste or appearance may deteriorate over time. Often indicated by the phrase “Best before…”, the BBE differs from the Use By date in that exceeding this date does not pose a health risk to the consumer, but simply indicates a decline in product quality. The BBE is set at the manufacturer’s discretion, who can determine it through appropriate assessments. After the BBE, a product can legally be sold, although its quality may be compromised. The BBE designation is now being progressively replaced by “Best before…” in accordance with the guidelines of the DGCCRF (French Directorate General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control).
