Google’s Penguin update is a filter implemented to re-evaluate the results generated by the search algorithm. First launched in late April 2012, it has since been fully integrated into the system. Its primary role is to counter artificial or excessive backlinking strategies aimed at improving organic search rankings. This filter identifies low-quality or artificial links, as well as unusual link patterns. Depending on the severity of the situation and other SEO factors of the site or page in question, backlinks may simply be ignored. In the most obvious cases of manipulation, the page may be penalized and lose visibility in Google’s search results. It’s important to note that the Penguin update doesn’t systematically penalize a page for the presence of suspicious backlinks, but it tends to disregard them. The detection of toxic links by this filter could potentially deter non-compliant practices.
