In the marketing field, field crowdsourcing refers to activities carried out by a large number of people on behalf of a specialized company, which then bills a retailer or supplier for the service. This approach has been facilitated by the increasing use of smartphones and dedicated apps. Individuals interested in earning money by performing small tasks are located via a mobile app and offered nearby assignments. These “missionauts” can, for example, collect data on customer service quality, take photos of products or shop windows. The geolocated information is then transmitted to the service provider, who prepares reports and analyses for its clients, such as national brands.

Using crowdsourcing generally reduces the costs of data collection, notably by eliminating travel expenses (as assignments are offered after the investigators are located) and by entrusting the operations to amateur individuals. Beyond its impact on inspections in large retail chains, this cost reduction makes it possible to extend these assignments to the small business sector. Furthermore, thanks to the rapid availability of a large number of investigators, turnaround times can be significantly reduced. While the quality of services can sometimes be questioned, the use of photographs as evidence of completed investigations helps to dispel these doubts.

Field crowdsourcing services represent a potential threat to established players in the sector and offer an alternative to inspection missions traditionally carried out internally by sales teams or brand inspectors. It is important to emphasize that the long-term viability of these players is not guaranteed, as numerous competitors have entered this market, leading to a form of natural competition. Presentations of the concept are available online for mission managers, as well as dashboards for brands and advertisers. Examples of crowdsourcing inspection services are also available for retail networks.
