This decree stipulates that the packer, importer, or the party primarily responsible for placing the product on the market is responsible for contributing to the disposal of packaging waste generated by household consumption of their products. These companies have the option of organizing their own packaging take-back system or participating in a collective system that promotes the selective collection of household packaging by local authorities. They can also join a company approved by the public authorities, such as Eco-Emballages or Adelphe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eco-Emballages was founded in 1992, and the following year, it launched its first awareness campaign on sorting household packaging, with the slogan “sorted packaging is no longer wasted packaging.” In 2007, in collaboration with ADEME (the French Agency for Ecological Transition), Eco-Emballages established the QualiTri and QualiPlus labels, which encourage improvements in waste collection and recovery rates while assessing the environmental impact of the collection service. The approximately 50,000 partner companies contribute about one cent per package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The foundational 1975 law concerning waste disposal and materials recovery has undergone several amendments since its enactment. It is now incorporated into Article L.541-1 of the French Environmental Code.
