Its usefulness became essential with the rise of blogs and their dynamic publishing systems. On a blog, a new article typically appears temporarily at the top of the homepage, then moves down as new content is published, eventually ending up in the archives. Without a permalink, sharing a link to a recent article requires using the homepage URL. However, if someone clicks on this link later, they might find themselves on the homepage, facing a different article than the one they were initially linking to, without the option to easily find the original article in the archives. The permalink solves this problem by providing a direct link to the article, even after it has been relegated to the archives.
