This type of patent can be filed in French, English, or German and covers up to 36 member states that have ratified the European Patent Convention. The entry into force of the London Agreement on May 1, 2008, led to the implementation of the amendments introduced by Article 10 of Law No. 2007-1544 of October 29, 2007, concerning the effects of the European patent in France, as stipulated in Articles L. 614-7 and L. 614-10 of the Intellectual Property Code. After its grant, the European patent is enforceable for a period of nine months.
