Unaddressed advertising mail, also known as unaddressed printed material, is a form of promotional communication distributed in a specific geographic area without mentioning the recipient’s name or address. In 2010, this type of advertising represented 80% of the 850,000 tons of non-personalized mail distributed annually, or approximately 25 kg per household. The main players in this distribution were the flyers from major retailers, although their use has declined considerably since the late 2010s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 2011 Sofres study for Mediapost, entitled “The French and Advertising Mail,” highlights the ambiguity surrounding the receipt of unaddressed advertising mail. This form of communication lies at the crossroads between mass advertising and targeted marketing. Households have the option of opting out of receiving this unaddressed printed material by using the unsubscribe option.
