Unlike truly meaningful data, these indicators tend to flatter the egos of decision-makers rather than provide a real measure of effectiveness or profitability. This term is primarily found in social media marketing campaigns, where elements such as the number of “likes,” fans, or followers can be considered “vanity metrics.” Of course, this perception is highly subjective.

“Vanity metrics” can also be applied at an individual level, particularly in a professional context. In this case, the same metrics, such as the number of subscribers or connections on LinkedIn, can be used to assess a person’s popularity or influence. It is also possible to include indicators such as the number of shares or comments.

Historically, the first example of a “vanity metric” on the internet was probably the concept of “hits,” which measured the number of requests sent to a server to load a web page. This figure could be misleading, for example, by counting every element on a page (such as images) as a “hit,” artificially inflating a website’s perceived audience. Thus, while “hits” were an early attempt at measuring online audience, they were more of a flattering indicator than a reliable measure of a site’s true popularity.

[313
post-164123","dictionnaire-dico","type-dictionnaire-dico","status-publish","hentry","categories-glossary-data-analytics-marketing-intelligence
["GET
