In the subscription sector and for certain services such as telephony or insurance, loyalty is often passive, manifesting as automatic contract renewal or customer inertia due to switching costs. In a more academic context, loyalty generally implies an attachment to the brand and a conscious or unconscious choice process resulting from prior attitudes toward the brand. The different forms of customer loyalty vary depending on the situation, whether it be loyalty based on habit, emotional attachment, satisfaction, or loyalty to a single brand. The relationship between customer satisfaction and loyalty is complex: while satisfaction plays a key role in building loyalty, there are loyal customers who are dissatisfied and disloyal customers who are satisfied.
