In 1976, Carrefour introduced a range of products to the market, primarily consisting of basic necessities such as flour, oil, and toast. These items were packaged in plain white packaging to be easily identifiable by consumers. The goal was to offer products supposedly of equivalent or even better quality than branded products, while being sold at more attractive prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although often associated with the rise of private label brands, generic products were not new; other retailers like Coop had already offered them to their customers at the beginning of the 20th century. However, Carrefour’s initiative received significant media attention and symbolized its desire to re-establish a balance of power with producers, while simultaneously meeting the demand of its customers for affordable products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
