At the heart of an online catalog lies the product database, a fundamental resource that populates the virtual storefront with a variety of information. Each record in this database typically contains textual data such as the product name, description, and price, accompanied by visuals like thumbnail photos or packshots, and sometimes multimedia content. This centralized database plays a key role in a multichannel environment by feeding the online catalog in real time, automating the creation of printed catalogs, and being used in physical stores.

To maximize product visibility on a website, it is crucial to seamlessly integrate the product database with e-commerce and online merchandising tools, while also connecting it to the site’s internal search engine. Indeed, the structure and content of product pages on an e-commerce platform are directly derived from this database. In sectors with an overabundance of products, such as cultural goods, high-tech, DIY, textiles, or industrial products, it is common for specialized suppliers to offer e-commerce businesses ready-to-use product databases containing tens or even hundreds of thousands of items.

A prime example of this approach is the Electre database, which lists over 1,400,000 French books. This illustrates the diversity and scope of product database offerings available to online retailers.
