Facebook’s Open Graph, also known as the Open Graph Protocol, is a technical system that allows websites external to Facebook to interact with the friends of those website users. It also allows data to be sent to the social network for potential sharing. In other words, the Open Graph offers third-party websites the ability to connect to the social network. For example, when a Facebook user visits a recipe website, they can share the recipe they’re viewing with their friends. Similarly, a song being listened to on Spotify can be shared with friends, who can then listen to it simultaneously. The most recent version of the Open Graph, launched by Facebook in September 2011, is the most advanced to date.
