A functional food is a product derived from the words “food” and “medicine,” which carries health claims indicating benefits beyond simple nutrition. While it may contribute to the prevention or management of certain health conditions, it is not classified as a medicine and does not require a prescription. Claims associated with a functional food must be scientifically sound and authorized by the relevant health authorities, such as ANSES in France.
