A custom domain name extension is a unique suffix associated with a company or organization. Obtaining such an extension requires submitting a specific application to ICANN, the Internet’s domain name registry, and paying a fee exceeding $100,000. These custom extensions remain largely unknown to the general public, thus requiring a significant investment in visibility and promotion to be fully utilized. Due to their high cost and limited accessibility, they appear to be primarily reserved for organizations with substantial financial resources and a strong reputation. However, even for these entities, the effectiveness and relevance of these extensions have not yet been fully validated. They can potentially be used for specific variations within a particular sector. For example, the .leclerc extension could be adapted into sport.leclerc (already in use), bijoux.leclerc, and so on. Some examples of French custom extensions already registered with ICANN are: .hermes, .paris, .axa.
