Session tracking is a common tracking method used in affiliate programs. When a user clicks on an affiliate element, such as a link or banner, a specific identifier is embedded in the URL that redirects them to the merchant’s website. This identifier tracks the customer’s visit throughout their session on the site and is retrieved in the event of a subsequent conversion to attribute the sale to the affiliate. If the conversion occurs during a later visit when the identifier is no longer present in the URL, other tracking techniques, such as cookies, can then be used to attribute the sale to the affiliate.
