A point of interest (POI) in mobile geolocation data is generally a specific location or geographic area identified and mapped by the company collecting the data. When a location matches a recorded POI on the map, it means the person has visited a place such as a store or an entertainment venue (like a football stadium or a swimming pool, for example). By analyzing visits to these POIs, it’s possible to infer lifestyle trends, purchase intentions, or habits. The acronym POI (Point of Interest) is often used to refer to these particular locations. At the beginning of 2017, the French geolocation company Databerries claimed to have mapped more than 100,000 POIs.
