Deconsumption refers to a trend of significant reduction in consumer purchases of goods and services, observed over the medium to long term. It can manifest in two forms: economic deconsumption, linked to unfavorable economic conditions, and sociological deconsumption, motivated by voluntary choices aimed at limiting consumption for ethical or environmental reasons. This phenomenon often results in a sectoral decrease rather than an overall decline, with a possible reallocation of spending towards other modes of consumption, such as the circular economy or buying secondhand goods.
