The Chatel Law, which came into force in 2008, aims to strengthen consumer protection and promote competition. It notably regulates the information required before the renewal of insurance and revolving credit contracts, facilitates the termination of these contracts, and governs relations between suppliers and distributors, as well as distance selling and online commerce. This law also imposes rules on the pricing of telephone assistance services and the transparency of profit margins in large retail chains. Some of its provisions have been partially superseded by subsequent legislation.
