Within a communications agency, the role of the art buyer is to research and select professionals such as illustrators, graphic designers, photographers, lighting designers, directors, producers, set designers, models, etc., who can contribute to the artistic creation or execution of an advertising campaign in accordance with established marketing strategies. This person may also be involved in choosing the visual or audio materials to be used. Historically, this position has been primarily held by women. For example, for a WWF advertising campaign related to the 2009 tsunami, three art buyers—Carmen Castillo, Carolina Galastri, and Clariana da Costa—were brought in. The campaign’s tagline was: “The tsunami killed 100 times more people than 9/11.”
