Fan relationship management (FRM) involves adapting CRM (Customer Relationship Management) techniques and strategies to the sports sector, with the aim of building strong relationships with a team’s fans or a club’s supporters. This approach seeks to foster long-term fan loyalty, encourage them to spend more (particularly on tickets, merchandise, food, etc.), and strengthen their role as brand ambassadors. Typically implemented by clubs, sports federations, or sporting event organizers, FRM relies on a deep understanding of the fans, enabling the optimization of interactions and engagement.

Within the framework of FRM, initiatives can target season ticket holders, casual or regular spectators, and sometimes even partners and sponsors. It is therefore a comprehensive system that can include targeted actions aimed at partners’ employees. The tools and channels used in fan relationship management include the fan base (equivalent to a customer base), the club’s website and/or app, the stadium app (which can be integrated with the club’s app), the club’s official social media accounts, newsletters, the club’s physical and online store, and other communication channels.

The concept of fan relationship management enhances the overall fan experience and complements the notion of fan experience. Initially developed within traditional marketing, these ideas were first implemented by major American sports leagues, which have often been pioneers in the field of sports marketing.
