Donor recognition programs are designed to build loyalty and encourage individual and corporate donors in the fields of philanthropy and patronage. They are primarily found in higher education institutions, universities, museums, and charitable organizations. Their objectives vary depending on the situation: to thank and recognize donors, to incentivize larger donations, and to ensure the renewal of contributions.

These programs offer donors various forms of recognition, such as public acknowledgments (plaques, room names, citations in reports, a wall of benefactors), invitations to exclusive events (conferences, galas, special events), involvement in the organization’s governance, or various gifts. They often rely on a system of donor statuses with specific benefits.

It is important to emphasize that the benefits offered within these programs must not compromise the philanthropic nature of the donations, as this could jeopardize the tax advantages granted to donors. A concrete example of a recognition program is the one implemented by the Mines Paristech school, which uses donor statuses to value its benefactors.
