A metasearch engine is a type of search engine that simultaneously queries several other engines and aggregates the results in a single interface. This consolidation of results eliminates duplicates on the search results pages. General-purpose metasearch engines have largely disappeared for legal reasons, such as the diversion of traffic and data from traditional search engines like Bing or Google, which are now highly effective. These traditional engines have rendered metasearch engines obsolete due to a lack of real added value. Nevertheless, the term “metasearch engine” is still used to describe vertical search engines specializing in specific fields such as tourism or employment.
