An electronic wallet, in the context of online transactions, is a system designed to make small payments over the internet. Initially, this system stored the amount on a smart card and debited it gradually, allowing users to top up their online wallet via cards or bank transfers. To use it, a card reader had to be connected to the computer, which limited its development to experimental phases. PayPal can be considered, in part, a form of electronic wallet. Outside the online sphere, the term also refers to a payment system using prepaid cards, such as Moneo, which also failed to achieve the expected success.
