The Best Before End date, abbreviated as “BBD,” is a concept introduced in December 2014, replacing the previous labeling. It is indicated by the phrase “best before.” Contrary to what one might think, exceeding the BBD does not pose a health risk to the consumer, but simply exposes the product to potential spoilage. The BBD is therefore determined at the manufacturer’s discretion, who can define it based on various assessments. The adoption of the term “BBD” is part of an effort to reduce food waste, as it is considered less stressful for the consumer than the old “use by” date.
