The term “bobo” is a contraction of “bourgeois-bohemian,” used to describe an affluent social group and a particular lifestyle. This expression first appeared in 1994 and emerged during the information age. Bobos are distinguished by their paradoxical mix of sophisticated conformism, even conservatism, and a certain disarray associated with a relaxed attitude. This concept was coined by the American journalist David Brooks, who developed it by analyzing the evolution of society in the United States. However, this phenomenon can be observed in many industrialized countries, including France. The characteristics of bobos were initially detailed by Brooks in his book “Bobos in Paradise,” published in 2000.
