The act of appropriation consists of claiming exclusive ownership of a good, an idea, a concept, or a space. In other words, to appropriate something is to consider it one’s own. According to Antonella Carù and Bernard Cova, researchers in environmental psychology emphasize that appropriation, whether individual or collective, translates into the exercise of a form of authority, control, or power (physical or psychological) over a place. On an individual level, appropriation is thus defined as the process of taking possession of something, with particular emphasis on the appropriation of space, which involves the creation and delimitation of a personal space.
